When a person (or pet) travels across the space, it disrupts the Wi-Fi signal transmission. The technology detects these disruptions and uses them to automate lighting activities like turning lights on and off. Unlike traditional motion sensors, SpaceSense detects movement in a room using Wi-Fi signals provided by compatible WiZ lights, which requires no additional hardware or batteries. WiZ Connected (owned by Signify) created SpaceSense, a unique motion detecting technology, for their smart lighting system.
SpaceSense requires at least two compatible WiZ lights in a room, which may be configured using the WiZ app. The device operates throughout the room and does not require a straight line of sight, lowering the likelihood of blind spots as compared to standard motion sensors. Sensitivity options allow you to control how easily the system is triggered–ideal for ignoring little pets, for example.
For privacy, all processing is done locally on the devices, and the feature is opt-in, allowing users to choose whether or not to enable it. SpaceSense is intended for domestic interior use and performs best when all lights are connected to the same Wi-Fi access point.
