Matter 1.4.1, a small but significant update to the Matter smart home protocol, has been released, according to the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). The goal of this release is to help consumers and device makers alike set up smart home devices more quickly, easily, and intuitively.
What It Is: The main device commissioning procedure has been improved using ESF. In the past, devices that needed to accept T&Cs, such those required to comply with GDPR, would have to instruct users to connect to them first through a specific app. This procedure is called Custom Commissioning Flow (CCF) in Matter. ESF simplifies the setup process by enabling T&Cs to be localized, shown, and updated for user consent within the commissioner or device provisioning app (the manufacturer’s Smart Home app). If a commissioner does not support ESF, the process can still revert to CCF.
Why It Matters: In the past, users frequently had to utilize the manufacturer’s app to approve terms and conditions (T&Cs), particularly for legal purposes like GDPR compliance—a procedure called Custom Commissioning Flow (CCF). This is streamlined by ESF, which makes setup easier and more consistent by enabling T&Cs to be shown, localized, and accepted directly within the primary smart home app.
Benefits: This enables device manufacturers comply with regional regulations without requiring consumers to download additional apps. It guarantees a smooth onboarding process for users without needless app switching.
What It Is: Previously, configuring a number of devices (such as a set of smart bulbs) required scanning the QR code for each device individually. If the app supports it, Matter 1.4.1 allows you to set up many devices simultaneously with a single QR code.
Why It Matters: This eliminates confusion and saves a lot of time, especially for users who are installing multiple devices at once. It’s a significant step toward making the expansion of smart homes easier and more natural.
What It Is: Manufacturers can now incorporate into NFC tags the same onboarding data that is present in QR codes. To begin the setup process, users only need to tap their phone against the device.
Why It Matters: Devices that are difficult to reach or see, such as wall switches with concealed QR codes or lightbulbs already in fixtures, will benefit greatly from this. In addition to QR and manual setup codes, it enhances the setup process’s flexibility and convenience.
For Device Manufacturers: The new capabilities provide more flexible onboarding options and facilitate compliance with international legislation, which may reduce support calls and product returns.
For Customers: Smart home technology is now more widely available and the setup procedure is simpler, which lessens frustration.
For the Industry: Matter 1.4.1 takes these additional capabilities (such as ESF and NFC tags) from provisional to official status by extending the certification program to incorporate them. Additionally, it adds reliability enhancements and minor adjustments, improving the overall quality of Matter-certified devices.
